Alcohol Based Tinctures vs Glycerin Based Tinctures
Here at Ecstatic Earth, we make both alcohol based and glycerin based tinctures, but these are actually just two of several choices when extracting herbs with liquids. Known as menstruums, these liquids generally include water, alcohol, glycerin, vinegar, or even wine.
Lots of debate exists over which type of tincture is "better." But deciding on one for yourself depends on what you're using it for, the herb in
question, and your general needs/preferences! The chart below highlights some of the strengths and weaknesses of glycerin and alcohol. Keep in mind that the chemical makeup of the herb makes a difference as well. For example, glycerin doesn't dissolve resins, and isn't as good as alcohol at extracting most alkaloids, but glycerin is more effective than alcohol at extracting from mucilaginous herbs like slippery elm, marshmallow root, mullein, etc.
